Tropical Winds Motel and Cottages are located on the west of Sanibel Island. They offers accommodation by the white sandy beach. There are one and two bedroom beach units situated right on the beach and also one and two bedroom cottages, which are set 300 feet back from the beach. Both offer flat screen televisions and kitchenettes. Guests of Tropical Winds can avail of the picnic area and the use of barbecues. There is Wi-Fi available; a small private parking area and it is dog friendly. This is self-catering accommodation. There are bars and restaurants in the locality such as the American Legion Post Bar and The Mad Hatter Restaurant, both of which are around a 30-minute walk away. J. N “Ding” Darling Wildlife Reserve is just a ten-minute drive away. Sanibel Lighthouse is 20 minutes by car and for shopping Periwinkle Place is ten minutes’ drive.
The interiors give an 'Old Florida' feel and the décor provides an instantly laid-back feel which helps guests to unwind and relax. The rooms feature wicker and rattan furniture, ceiling fans and are bright and airy. The owners also provide outdoor furniture and beach umbrellas.
Situated as they are right on and close to the beach, those staying here can avail of some stunning sunsets during the evenings. Guests can avail of outdoor seats at a barbecue area set in the dunes and watch the sun go down while enjoying a drink or their own grilled food.
Many guests find that the beach feels as if it is theirs alone as there are rarely other people on it. This adds to the overall feeling of peace and quiet, which helps guests to truly relax.
Both the cottages and the beach units are compact, designed to offer somewhere clean, relaxing and functional to stay in when not on the beach or sampling one of the local restaurants. However, some found them rather too small and feel that the considering the small size, the accommodation is somewhat overpriced.
While some love the tranquility offered by this accommodation, others find that it is too far from the main town area. Going out to eat requires either a long walk or having to drive there and back, rather than the convenience of having eateries, shopping and bars being right on the doorstep.
The Old Florida relaxed style suited some guests; others found that the interiors were a little to worn and old for their tastes. An overall update of the furniture, paint and fittings would bring the accommodation back up to a better standard.
