Fall Asleep to the Sound of Waves Crashing

This locale is right on the beach, just steps away from the water's edge, which allows breathtaking views of the nightly sunsets. Although a bit remote, it's only thirty minutes' drive (or less) from Carpinteria, downtown Ventura and Santa Barbara. There's a spacious saltwater swimming pool which overlooks the ocean as well, with plenty of lounge chairs and tables where you can enjoy your breakfast or drinks.

    positive:

    Award-Winning Dining

The Shoals restaurant is a delight, serving lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch for reasonable prices. Reservations are required. There's a vast assortment of options on the menu including vegetarian dishes and a nice wine list. The restaurant closes a bit on the early side (8:00 pm), so be sure to order drinks and dessert ahead of time or keep some in your mini-fridge. If you can, set your reservation in time to watch the sunset from the outdoor dining area.

    positive:

    Stunning Views, Decent Rooms

All rooms face the ocean at this hotel, so you can't miss the outstanding views. Floor-to-ceiling windows in some areas highlight the signature sunsets on the horizon and days of crashing waves. Otherwise rooms are a bit basic, but they have all the expected provisions. If you like a little more space, opt for the upper level suites. The views are better and the extra cost isn't much.

    Negative Reviews

    negative:

    Outdated Environs

Not the newest spot in town, but it does the job and the experience is priceless.

    negative:

    Lacking Amenities

There's no air conditioning or fans, so bring your own if you get hot easily. The Wi-Fi is often weak, so don't count on it.

    negative:

    Poor Sound-proofing

Bring your earplugs - some might be disturbed by voices and footsteps passing room windows, in the hallways or on upper floors.
