Yongala Lodge by The Strand is only a few minutes’ walk from Townsville’s Strand Beach. Restaurants and shops are equally close to the hotel and it’s an eight-minute drive to Townsville Airport. Accommodation consists of either air-conditioned apartments with kitchen; or en-suite bedrooms. Typically included throughout are tea and coffee facilities, flat-screen TV and refrigerator. Some accommodation units include a balcony. There is an inviting outdoor pool at Yongala Lodge by The Strand, Wi-Fi, a laundry facility and free parking. Currently closed for refurbishment, there are impressive areas for the staging of business and social events. Dining is currently restricted, due to the upgrading programme. Local restaurants, though, include The Balcony, Gyo Japanese, Seasoned and A Touch of Salt. Breakfast is served at The Balcony and Relish Restaurants. Things to do in Townsville include visits to Magnetic Island, experiencing wildlife at Billabong Sanctuary, skydiving and a spot of fishing … off the Great Barrier Reef!
Reasonably priced, the rooms are very clean and comfortable. Everything works fine. Thankfully, this includes the air conditioning. Basic, cost-cutting meals can be prepared in the kitchen which comes with utensils, microwave and stovetop. The pool is beautiful and a real feather in the hotel’s cap.
Quietly situated away from the main rat-run, it’s good to know that you can walk, very easily, to cafes, bars and restaurants. As for shops, don’t miss out on Coles and a bite to eat at Brumby’s Bakery. There’s even a gymnasium, plus secured play areas for kids.
Managers and staff members are so friendly, helpful and accommodating. Their input adds significantly to the enjoyment of any stay here. The fact that they are happy to join you for an end of the day wind down and chat, is an indication of the level of dedication they have for their roles.
There’s no lift here and the stairs leading to some rooms can be a bit tricky – particularly for elderly or infirm guests.
There’s a great deal to do and enjoy in the area but there’s no information pack, or anything like that, in the room. Yes, you’re invited to contact the proprietors, but unless you are particularly hard-nosed, you’ll feel guilty about imposing on their privacy.
Wi-Fi is only in the communal areas, but these spaces aren’t covered by the air-conditioning system which, incidentally, works like a dream in the rooms. Consequently, you are unlikely to hang around longer than is necessary in the stifling heat and humidity.
